# Darker Evenings, More Deliveries: Is Your Luxembourg Home Ready for Winter?

Winter brings a higher risk of parcel theft, and the early darkness also works in burglars’ favour. Find out how video surveillance and an alarm system can better protect your home in Luxembourg.

## Video surveillance against parcel theft: how it protects your entrance

Anyone who takes a parcel expects to go unnoticed. **Video surveillance** removes that certainty and gives you a recording of the incident if something happens.

Research supports this too: a [review of 76 studies](https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/1745-9133.12419) found on average **12% less crime** in residential areas with cameras. Across all settings, the reduction reached **34%** when cameras were combined with several other measures, such as better lighting. In a [survey of 422 incarcerated burglars in the US](https://www.securitymagazine.com/articles/84343-study-says-convicted-burglars-confirm-value-of-alarms-other-deterrents), more than 40% also named cameras as a possible reason to choose another target.

What to look for in your system:

- **Motion detection:** you get an instant alert on your smartphone when someone approaches your door.
- **Night vision:** many winter deliveries arrive at dusk, so the image must stay clear in low light.
- **Position:** the camera should be clearly visible and cover the front door and the spot where parcels are left.
- **Recording:** you should be able to find the right footage quickly when you need it.

Additional cameras can also cover the garage, the terrace and the back of the house.

## Alarm systems: how to lower your risk of burglary

According to [Luxembourg Police in 2021](https://paperjam.lu/article/a-recherche-alarme-avant-vacan), **95% of burgled houses had no alarm system**.

The police say a **siren visible on the outside of the building** is a particularly strong deterrent. For the protection to work, you should [switch your alarm on even for short absences](https://police.public.lu/en/prevention/cambriolages.html), such as a trip to the Christmas market.

## Early darkness: make your home look lived in

In the late afternoon, a dark house shows that nobody is home. [Luxembourg Police](https://police.public.lu/en/prevention/cambriolages.html) therefore recommends switching on the lights as night approaches. **Programmed lighting** does this automatically, and **motion detectors** light up shaded entrances.

## Ski holidays: when the house stands empty for longer

A snow-covered driveway without footprints shows that nobody is home. Ask a neighbour to clear the snow. Through the free police service [“Départ en vacances”](https://police.public.lu/fr/commissariat-virtuel/depart-vacances.html), your home can also be included in preventive patrols.
